7th shanghai short film contest
Another very successful contest! On Saturday the 6th of December, we held our seventh Short Film Contest at "The Xinguang Film Centre". A crowd of around 400 filled the cinema and due to continuing demand for tickets we decided to organise a second screen at the location of our after-party, "Le Royal Meridien Hotel", where an additional 150 viewers were able to see the movies. The top prize went to "All In" by Hector Nanquette and Severin
Bonnichon which also managed to scoop the audience choice award and the award for best actor, Laurent Barukh. The best actress award went to Jin Huanhuan for her role in Dark Moon by GianPaolo Lupori. This time around the contest theme was "Erotica", so directors experimented with themes such as seduction, fantasy and sensuality. This meant all the entries had to have a storyline or some scenes that gently raised the temperature for the audience. However, this was not a licence to include pornography or vulgarity and such movies always set for an immediate disqualification. Partial nudity was permitted, however images of male or female genitalia were strictly forbidden. In addition, in order to keep a balance throughout the ceremony as well as the overiding fact that the contest was being held in China and we must respect the acceptable norms of the Chinese government and Chinese society in general, we instructed all teams to include no more than two minutes of steamy scenes.
Winning Film
2nd Best Film
3rd Best Film
Best Actor
Best Actress
Audience's Favourite Film
Each team had to include four specific elements in their film. The elements always change from contest to contest and are always involve some aspects of film-making such as, cinematography, audio, editing, etc. The reason for this is to ensure that the films have been produced solely for this contest and that they are not old stock items, just being recycled. We would love to trust you all but unfortunately, we live in the real world! Here were the elements for this contest:
Camera element: A shot from above (minimum 7 seconds) Editing element: An unrelated shot to provoke associations in the viewer. Sound element: Include the sound of nature in one scene. Lighting element: A chiaroscuro (a shot where the background is completely dark and the actor is well lit)
We believe including more people in your project will bring you more points of view, angles and know-how. It can be especially useful to add somebody with knowledge in a particular area which you are lacking (such as editing, lighting, make-up ... etc). If you are convinced and would like some more members in your team, then "meiwenti", contact us, and we will try to provide them for you! Or likewise, if you want to participate but don't have a team, contact us and we will assign you to a team. This applies to people with knowledge in a particular area and those without any experience who just want to join a fun project.

Also, the audience got to vote for their favoutite in the always popular "Audience Favourite Award".
Venue
The venue for this ceremony was the Xinguang Film Art Centre located at 586 Ningbo Lu (near Xinguang Bei Lu). This is a wonderfully refurbished old cinema from the real glory days of cinema in Shanghai, the 1930's.
Meiwenti Productions has the right to show the films on its website or at one of its partner websites and to produce compilation DVDs. This is all in the interest of promoting the Shanghai movie scene.
